Living wills or advance care directives
A living will or Advance Care Directive is a document meant to guide those who make decisions if a person is unable to communicate their healthcare decisions or no longer has the capacity to make reasonable decisions. It lets the attorneys for personal care know for how long, and in what circumstances a person wishes to be kept alive. In Ontario it is of persuasive value but not necessarily binding on the person to whom it is addressed.

You should always check that the person you name as your Attorney to make Healthcare Decisions for you is willing and able to follow your wishes. Your best friend can have deeper held values that would clash with your own wishes.
